Monday evening, I needed four items from the grocery store. Because it was on my way home, I went to a big box store.
I planned to make chicken and asparagus paninis for dinner. My plans quickly changed.
In produce, there was no asparagus available – the display was empty.
The specialty breads were nearly all gone.
In the meat department, the chicken tenders’ cupboard was bare, and I grabbed the last package of chicken breasts.
At least the cheese was in stock.
This particular store restocks early in the morning – 10 hours earlier. How could the produce and meat departments, and the bakery be all out of basic food? And on a Monday!
I looked for someone to help me and found no one in produce or meat. One person was in the bakery on the telephone.
Stores have three things to focus on three things to be competitive: price, products and people.
If the shelves are empty and there aren’t any associates to ask, is the store going to sell anything? No.
That doesn’t sound like a good business model if a company wants to be profitable.
