Importance of 4-Step Process

 

I just completed a bathroom remodel where I retiled the floor. Several of my neighbors commented that they were impressed that I was tackling such a big project by myself. What I didn’t tell them is that it’s really pretty easy.

It requires the right tools, a basic knowledge of geometry, and a firm understanding of the four-step strategic planning process: Research, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation.

If I were tackling a communication challenge, I’d follow these steps:

  • Research – What’s the current landscape? What’s history tell us?
  • Planning – Define the goals. Determine the objectives. Decide what to measure.
  • Implementation – This is the tactical “stuff and things” (website, blog, press release, etc.)
  • Evaluation – What worked? What didn’t? Where can we improve? Did we meet our goal? Why not?

Laying tile I utilize the same steps:

  • Research – Prepare the floor. Determine where the exact center is located.
  • Planning – Develop a plan for the project. What direction and order? Check your plan with loose tiles first.
  • Implementation – Apply mortar. Lay tiles. Grout.
  • Evaluation – Clean up and then admire your work. Where were your challenges? What would you have done differently? Are there areas to touch up?

Years ago, when I learned the importance of these four simple steps my eyes were opened, and I grew professionally. I was able to see that tactics without structure are not strong. They might not even be reaching your target audience.

I only wish I could have opened my eyes to geometry earlier. In high school, I tried to learn from a book and squeaked by with a “B.” When I use the principles on actual work, it all makes sense.

It’s the same for communications. When you can see the big picture and how all the pieces fit together, you’ll be more valuable to your company.
