I had coffee last week with social-media expert Jessica Miller-Merrell. Three people joined the conversation, while we were discussing the benefits of personal branding, Twitter and building relationships.
Each person readily admitted they didn’t understand Twitter’s purpose or how to use it. Jessica explained some basics and I added some advantages. We volleyed back and forth, but our comments never hit home. I finally understood why.
One of the networkers said that she was afraid. Her fear of the unknown was standing in the way of her growth. Understanding Twitter was too insurmountable a challenge.
There’s an old saying, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”
The Twitter-phobic networker was too terrified to take the first bite, and until she does, she’ll never be able to understand and utilize the platform to grow her brand and her business.
It doesn’t matter if it’s social media, balancing the books, writing a memo or speaking in front of people. If you want to continue to evolve, you have to conquer your fears – one bite at a time.
