Winning Big Is Hard: Celebrate a Small Win Today

Every professional football coach starts the season with one goal in mind – win the Super Bowl. That’s a lofty goal since only one team can achieve it. To make that goal reachable, coaches develop smaller goals like winning each of the 16 regular season games, or having fewer turnovers or penalties than the other team.

When coaches create smaller wins for their team, it shows the players how to win and how to be winners. Players create their own smaller wins like punts downed inside the 20, sacks, passes broken up or yards after the catch.

When did you last celebrate a win?

Winning is hard, and with today’s economy, finding wins – even smaller ones – can be challenging.

Many people haven’t felt like winners in a year or two. Companies are filled with people who are scared and unhappy. Depending on how quickly this illness spreads, the company could go on life support or die prematurely. All because the workers have forgotten what it feels like to win.

Did you or a co-worker help a customer resolve an issue? Make a great presentation? Have an idea how to save money? Complete a training program?

It’s the coach’s (manager, boss, supervisor) job to motivate the team and to celebrate smaller wins. Get the team thinking like winners. Only then will the team live up to their potential and be as successful and productive as possible.

If you coach to the highest level of thinking – you’ll get the highest level of performance.
